The extension and renovation of the Sidwell Friends Middle School has transformed a 55 year-old facility into a school that teaches environmental responsibility by example. The building reveals its orientation through the configuration of exterior sunscreens on the façade, which are designed to balance thermal performance with the optimum use of daylight. Fixtures in day-lit spaces include integral dimming ballasts that respond continuously to a local photocell within the room. A light shelf is incorporated into the façade to transmit daylight deep into the building, while shading the corridors from direct sun. The exterior walls of the extension and the third floor of the existing building are sheathed with off-site-fabricated wood cladding, sunscreens and high performance operable windows.
Solar chimneys are designed for mechanically-assisted natural ventilation to minimise the need for artificial cooling. A central element of the campus is a constructed wetland that treats and recycles all building wastewater for grey-water use within the building, resulting in a 94% reduction of municipal water use. The collection and diversion of rainwater through the vegetated roof reduces storm water runoff. A series of flow forms direct rainwater to a biology pond and rain garden that supports the native habitat and serves as a component of the science curriculum. The vegetated roof retains storm water and reduces the "heat island" effect that is characteristic of conventional roofing.
A central energy plant serves the entire campus, allowing greater efficiency and control of energy resources. Five percent of the building's overall electrical load is generated by photovoltaic panels. Building materials are reused, recycled, rapidly renewable and/or regionally acquired, including reclaimed wood cladding for the façade. Reclaimed materials include exterior cladding made from reclaimed red cedar fermentation barrels, greenheart flooring and decking from pilings in Baltimore Harbor, and all of the stone to construct the wetland and other outdoor stone walks and walls.
