In the Straw-Bale House innovative design and construction elements result in a dramatic reduction in energy and resource consumption, at costs comparable to conventional buildings of the same type. The building combines passive-house technology, renewable energy resources and regionally avai-lable materials, like straw bales for insulation, in a modular and contemporary architectural design.

The design concept features separate technical and biological material cycles. The following aspects together allow the overall goals of energy and resource efficiency to be achieved: minimal excavation and reuse for clay plaster; floor, wall system and ceiling construction free of thermal bridges; vege-tation and rainwater retention on a lightweight green membranous roof; innovative earth heat-exchanger for temperature balancing; special "Simplyfire" biomass stove delivers the heat through the ventilation system with staggered timing; resource-efficient lighting; power supply provided by solar radiation and biomass only; no building waste other than biodegradable materials (the building shell is made of renewable materials like wood, straw and clay); low maintenance requirements due to wood protection measures and the modular design of the house technology (backbone system).

The S-House serves as a centre for sustainable technology, renewable raw materials and sustainable building technologies. The components and design structures are presented to visitors, making tradi-tional know-how and recent developments in the building industry accessible to the public. Apart from exhibitions, the S-House also hosts technical events such as symposiums, workshops and advanced learning sessions.
