This project is a prototype for a garden building in a lush tropical city. It contains living spaces, production spaces and a shop, and also encourages local flora and fauna by stimulating the presence of butterflies through the use of plants that produce nectar to feed them. Butterflies are one of the most effective bio-indicators of an ecosystem's environmental quality. They are particularly important in this area, which contains the largest diversity of butterflies in the world.
Husos devised flexible spatial solutions in response to modest local economic conditions by using a staged construction process. The building has two main elements: a detached façade - a large metal latticework box where climbing plants can grow to host and feed the butterflies - and horizontally dislocated floor slabs, which together respond to both eco- and socio-environmental aspects. The entire steel structure was built first, along with the ground and first floors to get the most productive part of the programme underway, leaving the second and third floor beams and columns exposed. This enabled the space to be used as a multi-purpose covered terrace for leisure and working activities until the next building stage. The aim was to recreate a vertical version of the hybrid use of public and private spaces characteristic of the traditional home/business combination in the area. The structure generates comfortable interior conditions, thanks to its porous and open façade, it facilitates natural ventilation across all floors and collects rainwater to irrigate the plants. Together with the biologist Francisco Amaro, the architects also developed an independent, non-profit entity called "Proyecto Cali", to promote ecological research and action-awareness strategies. It aims to take advantage of the flow of visitors to the atelier to provide information about biodiversity and publicise other issues related to local urban development. |
